Sony Vaio VGN-SZ3XP/C Windows XP Clean Install

The Sony Vaio VGN-SZ3XP/C comes preinstalled with a huge pile of junk. Therefore and by some other reasons I wanted to install a normal Windows XP Professional.

Sony Support Guide describes "How to Install the Windows® XP Operating System and VAIO® Applications" in general. But the procedure for Vaio VGN-SZ3XP/C seems to differ quite a lot or the description of Sony Support is not detailed enough.

Here a related article. It explains "The Clean Windows Install" for Sony FE Series.
And Here another article concerning a Vaio VGN-SZ120PB.
Pre-bundled Software on Sony Notebooks.

For this, here follows my own experience with clean installing Windows XP on a Vaio VGN-SZ3XP/C.

Remember, F2 is the key to enter BIOS setup.

  1. Switch on the new Vaio, run through the whole preinstalled setup process. When you have the Windows running, create the System Recovery Disk and the Application Recovery Disk with the Vaio Recovery Utility.
  2. Take your normal (retail or don't know what) Windows XP installation disk, boot it and start the normal Windows installation. Probably you leave the disk partitioning like it was and install to C: partition.
  3. From the System Recovery Disk run \VAIO Applications\Drivers\Chipset\infinst_autol.exe to install Intel chipset drivers.
  4. Install hotfix KB896256 (Mobile Dual Core): From System Recovery Disk \VAIO Applications\Hotfix run "WindowsXP-KB896256-v3-x86-DEU.exe"
  5. Install hotfix KB909667 (System stops responding during standby, hibernate or shutdown.): From System Recovery Disk \VAIO Applications\Hotfix run "WindowsXP-KB909667-x86-DEU.exe"
  6. From the System Recovery Disk \VAIO Applications\Drivers\SonyNC right click "SonyNC.inf" and from context menu select "Install" to install "Sony Notebook Control" drivers.
  7. From the System Recovery Disk \VAIO Applications\Drivers\SonyPI right click "SonyPI.inf" and from context menu select "Install" to install "Sony Programmable I/O" drivers.
  8. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer 1 Sony Utils DLL" run "Setup.exe" to install Sony Shared Library part 1.
  9. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer 2 Sony Shared Library" run "Setup.exe" to install Sony Shared Library part 2.
  10. Start "Device Manager", go to the device entry marked with a question mark "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)", right click it and select "Update Driver...". Select on the System Recovery Disk the directory "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\Video2" as installation source. This installs the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 driver.
By the way, the Vaio has two video controllers, one integrated into the chipset and the other is the Nvidia GeForce. The controller to use can be switched by a small slide switch marked stamina/speed. Speed selects the Nvidia GeForce controller.
If you want to install the driver for the chipset controller too, then switch to "stamina" and reboot. The directory "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\Video1" System Recovery Disk contains the driver.
  11. Install hotfix KB835221 : From System Recovery Disk \VAIO Applications\Hotfix run "KB835221.exe" to install "UAA High Definition Audio Class Driver".
This automatically finds the driver files on System Recovery Disk for Audio and Modem device and installs them.
  12. Go to the "Device Manager", there go to the device entry marked with a question mark "Ethernet Controller", right click it and select "Update Driver...". Select on the System Recovery Disk the directory "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\Network" as installation source. This installs the Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller driver.
  13. Setup the Internet connection on the just installed ethernet, install Antivirus software and update the installed Windows via Microsoft Windows Update.
  14. Go to the "Device Manager", there go to the device entry marked with a question mark "USB-Device", right click it and select "Update Driver...". Select on the System Recovery Disk the directory "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\Camera\VGP-VCC2" as installation source. This installs the built-in Sony Visual Communication Camera driver.
  15. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\WirelessLAN\" run iProInst.exe to install Wireless LAN Driver. From "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\WirelessLANSetting\" run WirelessSet.exe.
  16. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer Sony MP4 Shared Library" run Setup.exe which installs the Sony MP4 Shared Library.
  17. Go to the "Device Manager", there go to the device entry marked with a question mark "Mass Storage Controller", right click it and select "Update Driver...". Select on the System Recovery Disk the directory "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\FlashMedia" as installation source. This installs the Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller driver.
  18. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\Blootooth\" run Setup.exe to install Toshiba Bluetooth Stack and Bluetooth USB Controller (ALPS/UGX UGPZ6XC02A) driver. Before running the installer set the "Wireless" slide switch on the Vaio to on.
  19. Go to the "Device Manager", there go to the device entry marked with a question mark "Biometric Coprocessor", right click it and select "Update Driver...". Select on the System Recovery Disk the directory "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\Fingerprint" as installation source. This installs the UPEK TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor driver.
  20. Go to the "Device Manager", there go to "Mice and other pointing devices", there right click "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" and select "Update Driver...". Select on the System Recovery Disk the directory "\VAI O Applications\Drivers\Pointing" as installation source. This installs the ALPS Pointing Device for Vaio driver.
  21. Go to the "Device Manager", there go to "System devices", there right click "Unknown device" marked with an exclamation mark and select "Update Driver...". Select on the System Recovery Disk the directory "\VAIO Applications\Drivers\TPM" as installation source. This installs the Infineon® Trusted Platform Module driver.
  22. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer HDD Protection Utility\" run Setup.exe to install the HDD Protection Utility.
  23. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer Battery Checker\" run Setup.exe to install the ISB Utility.
  24. From the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer VAIO Power Management\" run Setup.exe to install the VAIO Power Manager.
  25. Running the Setup.exe from the System Recovery Disk "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer Setting Utility Series\" and "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer VAIO Event Service\" enables the Hotkeys for volume control, suspend and the like.
  26. Then
"\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer VAIO Update\" to install Vaio online update program.
"\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer Protector Suite QL 5.3\" to enable login by fingerprint sensor
    "\VAIO Applications\Applications\Utils Installer Video Shared Library\"
