RTS2 observatory operations

Before you start

Before you start any activity read the News. Read and understand the relating articles Telescope pier collision avoidance and Dome slit synchronization.

The user for the operations is obs.

Make sure that you check if somebody else is using the computer miyo.obsvermes.loc using


and if a user is logged in use

talk user

to get in contact. By definition the person who powered on miyo.obsvermes.loc is the primary user.

If the response is even on the shell slow, read the section Network Bandwidth consideration.

Emergency Shutdown

on miyo.obsvermes.loc


After the dome motor has been stopped (second line) the WLAN connection to the computers and camera on the dome is interrupted.


Current Layout (2009-08-07).

All systems with the exception of

are usually shutdown if no observation is in progress.

In case the IP9258 does not switch the outlet, follow theses instructions.

There are three IP 9258 power switches installed which can be reached on obsvermes.obsvermes.loc with the script setpower.sh. The current layout can be seen on the figure on the right side.

Since 2009-09-26 there is installed on obsvermes.org the infrastructure to actuate the IP9258 power outles of observatory vermes.

There is an indiserver started from the shell script


listening on port 7623 which may be connected to via ssh with the command

  ssh -N -f -L localhost:7624:localhost:7623 obsvermes.org

The configuration for the three IP9258 indi drivers started is in /etc/indi/ip9258

Kernel modules

If not loaded at boot time then manually load the FLI kernel module

modprobe fliusb

and check the devices

  • Check if ntp are running on obsvermes.org, miyo.
  • Make sure that all devices have the same time within a second and that it is the correct local time.
Video cameras

Setup the SSH port forwarding. On miyo.obsvermes.loc check if all video devices are available

If not reboot miyo.

The essential streams on miyo.obsvermes.loc are started at boot time. If no stream is present, turn at least one camera on following the procedure Standard ports and streams. After a ssh tunnel to obsvermes.org has been established e.g. use on the local computer

mplayer -framedrop -nocache
mplayer -framedrop -cache 32

to display the stream of the webcam on the dome. To minimize the delay of the stream press one or two times "]" in the mplayer window.


The following script starts the indiserver for the SBIG STV


Sometimes the STV looses contact to the host computer. It is necessary then to restart the indiserver. Use a separate indiserver for that reason.

If you receive something similar

./indiserver: bind: Address already in use stv: EOF

the observatory is already in operation. Try to contact the operator.
